St. Fx 'Rams' their way into school's record books.

2017-04-07

St. FX Sr. Boys Basketball have their most successful season in school history.

The St Francis Xavier Senior Boys Basketball team was loaded with grade 12's to start the season.  The team was determined to achieve the success they felt they were capable of if they worked hard and played together. The season started off well for the St. FX Rams as they won their home tournament, the Mike Dea Classic, over reigning Saskatchewan Provincial Champions, Dr. Martin Leboldus High School. Mixed success at the Reb saw FX finish 2-1 in the tournament. League play started well in December, and would end well in February, as the Rams finished undefeated with a 10-0 record, and by the slimmest of margins claimed the number 1 seed for the playoffs. As the season went on, tournament play also went well as the Rams defeated Campbell Collegiate in the final of the Bedford Road Invitational Tournament; this was their first championship in the very prestigious BRIT. A  second place finish to St. Mary’s in Calgary set FX back a little but a rebound tournament victory over Bishop McNally at the Spartan Showdown set the team up with confidence heading into the playoffs. The playoffs offered some challenging tests but the FX boys made it to the final where they would face off against the Harry Ainlay Titans, who were also undefeated in league play. A high scoring and incredibly entertaining final saw FX prevail by one point 93-92. It was St. FX’s first Division 1 Senior Basketball championship in combined league play. Success throughout the year meant that the team would enter Provincials with a 32-2 record and a number 1 seed. Provincial play would see the Rams qualify for the semi final where they faced Bishop McNally. A tough game that saw both teams dig deep ended with the Rams losing out on a chance for Provincial success. Semi final defeat was disheartening but FX rebounded the next day and defeated Sir Winston Churchill to claim Bronze. Despite the loss at Provincials, overall the team completed the greatest season in school history with a 35-3 overall record, which included three tournament victories, a City Championship, and bronze at provincials.
