Rebels Basketball Brings Home the Hardware

The Jasper Place Rebels Senior Girls won gold in Edmonton and Silver at Provincials.
The 2015/16 season was one of growth for our young team of 4 grade 10’s and 8 grade 11’s. With a 12-0 record in league, we felt confident yet humbled heading into playoffs. Striving for a city championship banner and a spot in the provincial final, pressure and expectations were high. The first games of playoffs showcased our desire and true mission to dominate and achieve our goal. After our convincing performances against ABJ and Paul Kane, we were ecstatic to have the chance to win gold in our home gym. With a supportive crowd and intense atmosphere, we were no longer playing for just the individuals on the team, but for Jasper Place as a whole. Through the back and forth lead changes and the scrappy play we were able to pull out a 61-53 win over St Albert. This was a great day for the women’s program at Jasper Place as the Juniors also won the City Championship earlier that day over Archbishop O’Leary.
After our first accomplishment of winning a city championship, we were able to dial in and focus on the practices leading up to provincials. Getting to Red Deer was one thing, but winning the final was a whole other mission. After a convincing win over Grande Prairie in the opening game, we won a rematch with St Albert in the quarter-final and went on to face provincial rivals Western Canada out of Calgary in the semi-final, where we earned our way to the provincial final. Here we faced St Francis out of Calgary, who were ranked #1 in the province all year. Despite going down early, we were able to show some heart and fight back to within 1 point. Unfortunately we fell just short in the end, losing 54-46 and coming home with a silver medal. The experience was made even more memorable by being able to play in front of our families, friends, and staff members who came out to Red Deer to support us, and we felt the Rebel Pride.
Following our season of exciting wins and a few tough losses, we have learned so much and have become an even more tightly knit team. Now we look forward to next year and are excited for what is to come!
